Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, University of Manchester
The new ‘Learning Commons Building’ provides a world-class learning environment for students. The space provides facilities for private study, group work, use of the library’s digital information, internet and ‘Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)’, online research, presentations, use of academic support services and social interaction.
To achieve the buildings low energy credentials and BREEAM Excellent rating, Foreman Roberts designed a natural ventilated solution which can be easily converted to mixed mode using passive chilled beams and perimeter displacement ventilation to maintain comfort conditions during peak summertime conditions. The design includes passive design solutions, energy efficient appliances and systems, and renewable energy source. Client: University of Manchester
